Lawful Trade Policy
Last updated:
Catalytic converter theft hurts car owners, workshops and the honest recycling trade. Catalytic Price and its buying points do not buy stolen converters, and the Service may not be used to value or sell them. This policy explains how we keep stolen material out.
What the Service is for
Catalytic Price is a price reference for people who handle used converters lawfully: scrap-metal dealers, recyclers, auto dismantlers, workshops, fleet owners, and private owners selling a converter from their own vehicle. It is not a marketplace: members cannot list goods for sale or contact each other through it.
When you sell to a buying point
- Identification: every seller shows a valid identity document; businesses also give their registration details.
- Proof of origin: we may ask where the material came from, for example a workshop job card, an invoice, or the registration papers of the vehicle it was removed from.
- Records: we record the seller, the material and the transaction as the law of the country requires, including South Africa's Second-Hand Goods Act where it applies, and we keep those records for the required period.
- Refusal: we refuse material when the seller cannot identify themselves or explain where it came from, or when anything suggests it may be stolen.
Working with the police
We report suspected stolen material to the police, keep it aside when asked, and answer lawful requests for our records. Accounts linked to stolen goods are closed without refund.
If your converter was stolen
Report the theft to the police first. Then send us the case number, a photo of the converter or its code, and the make and model of the vehicle through the contact page; if it reaches one of our buying points, we will tell the police.
Report a concern
If you think someone is using Catalytic Price to sell stolen converters, write to [email protected] or use the contact page. You may stay anonymous.
